Did you know that indoor air can be 5 times more polluted than outdoor air?
When you think of air pollution, outdoor smoke contamination by vehicles and factories is what inevitably comes to mind. But did you know that indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air? The most common indoor air pollutant, found in all residential units and buildings, is formaldehyde – a common industrial chemical and VOC (Volatile Organic Compound), often found in such everyday products as wood furniture, disinfectant, glue and insulation material. These products release it over time as a colourless gas, contaminating indoor air without our knowledge. Therefore, formaldehyde is always present – and can last years.
